Friday Music

For the past few months the pupils at St. Andrew’s have been enjoying music lessons on a Friday with Mr. New. Being treated to brand new compositions on a range of instruments is now a regular feature of our weekly celebration assembly ‘Friday Forum’ and there is now an informal club on Friday lunchtimes where our new instruments (including a bass guitar) are used by the pupils.

Yesterday Constable Class made the most of Mr. New’s expertise and the glorius weather by going outside to compose xylophone and glockenspiel pieces. Those of us fortunate enough to also be outside at the time were treated to an ethereal experience as the light breeze floated the sounds around us.

Some of the compositions created by other classes will be appearing on the Showcase page during the course of next week.

Halstead Town Football Tournament

On Friday 20th June a team from St. Andrew’s took part in a football tournament for schools organised by Halstead Town Football Club.

The competition involved six teams split initially into two groups of three. Our first game was against Holy Trinity Halstead ‘B’. Playing in a 3-2-1 formation we had a defensive look but with defender Adam pushing up to help midfield there were attacking options. We won a number of corners in the first half and it was from one of these set pieces that Cameron headed home a cracking goal. Holding onto that 1-0 lead for the rest of the game we booked ourselves a place in the semi-finals as Holy Trinity ‘B’ had already lost to St. Andrew’s Halstead in their first game.

Early favourites to win the tournament, St. Andrew’s Halstead brought the game to us from the off. We defended well again despite the much better opposition, and indeed had the occasional chance to score. Unfortunately the quality of St. Andrew’s Halstead’s passing got the better of us and they soon took the lead. It was the first goal we had conceded and our players seemed shell-shocked. They were still composing themselves when St. Andrew’s Halstead made it 2-0. A similar situation in the second half saw the Halstead school score their third and fourth goals in quick succession and it ended with a 4-0 scoreline that reflected neither our stout defending nor the number of chances created.

As runners-up in our group we then faced the winner of the other group in the semi-final. Holy Trinity ‘A’ had walked through their group, and with a team made up entirely of junior league players we knew we would be facing another stern test. Stage fright struck from the off, with a bigger pitch (that Holy Trinity ‘A’ had already played on during the group stage), an attacking minded opposition and the knowledge that the team were just 16 minutes away from the final affecting our players’ composure. Holy Trinity ‘A’ scored within seconds of the off, but unlike against St. Andrew’s Halstead the goal seemed to strengthen our resolve. Despite being on the back foot for much of the first half we created several chances on the break and Holy Trinity ‘A’ were thwarted in their attempts to extend their lead during the first half. The plan in the second half was to put players behind the ball and to try and equalise on the break. It was a strategy that worked for over five minutes until our defensive lines were broken and the score was 2-0. Holy Trinity ‘A’ were buoyed and made the most of our tired legs, scoring twice more to again leave a final score of 4-0.

Holy Trinity ‘A’ went on to win 1-0 in the final against St. Andrew’s Halstead and lift the cup. We had lost to the two finalists despite spirited performances, won our first game and shown a team spirit which won us admirers. Well done to the whole team!

In addition to the main tournament there was a penalty shoot out competition. This was won by a player from St. Andrew’s Halstead, but Jack was our representative in the final and came a very creditable second.

It was the first time that Halstead Town had hosted such a competition and we would like to thank them for inviting us and for putting on such an enjoyable event.

The Healthy Holst Restaurant

Just before half-term Holst Class, led on this occasion by Ms Purcell, created The Healthy Holst Restaurant as part of a PSCHE topic on keeping healthy.

The whole class planned, prepared and served a three course meal to Head teacher Ms Trappitt, Chair of the Governors Mr. MacKinnon, Rector Keith Holloway and Gardening Club organiser Mrs Watkins in the school pavilion.

Everything went well and the guests all said they had a wonderful meal with excellent service.

Well done to Holst and Ms Purcell!
